Episode Information

In this glossy and celebratory two part series, Lucy Worsley will oversee a glorious re-imagining of one of the most famous weddings of all time; that of Queen Victoria and her consort Prince Albert. Aided by experts, Lucy will painstakingly recreate the most important elements of the wedding celebrations, scouring history books, archives, newspapers and even Victoria’s very own diaries for details. The team will include food historian Annie Gray, clothing expert Harriet Waterhouse and military historian Jasdeep Singh. From the dress and the bouquet, to the beautifully tiered cake and the music for the ceremony, each element will be carefully researched, remade by hand, and finally put to use in a dramatic re-staging of the big day itself. Through the series, Lucy and her team will unpack and explore the hidden iconography and symbolism of this hugely significant wedding. They'll reveal new insights into Victoria and Albert’s relationship, both public and private. They will shed a fascinating new light on the wider implications of the wedding, and reveal how this one extraordinary event helped to reinvent modern marriage. With the re-staging of the wedding the driving force of their activities, Lucy and her experts will deliver revelatory specialist factual content alongside a feel good, emotional narrative.
