In the waters that surround the volcanic island of Mauritius lie hidden secret worlds that are infested with sharks, creating one of the ocean’s great spectacles.
These areas are called Shark Pits.
No one knows how many of these pits there are, and no one knows why they attract so many sharks. What is known is that the sharks keep coming to these areas, and that the behaviour they display here is not typical of what would be expected: The grey reef or blacktail shark that is drawn to these mysterious sunken pits shows very little, almost no aggression, quite unusual for a species of shark known for its threat display when cornered. They also do not swim constantly, strange when it is considered that grey reef sharks have to keep moving in order to breathe.
What is it about these pits that alter the sharks’ behaviour so noticeably? Why do the sharks gather in these pits? Do they come here to mate, to pup?
To find the answers to these questions, two dedicated men will enter the unusual sunken pits to investigate. Hugues Vitry, local dive guide and naturalist who originally discovered the Shark Pits, will lead Ryan Johnson, shark scientist, into the labyrinthine reefs, caverns and caves on a journey of discovery.
Together, through adverse conditions, they will brave these underground caverns, armed with scientific equipment, to unlock the mysterious Shark Pits.
This will be a difficult expedition. It is January, heart of the cyclone season, and diving conditions are particularly rough. Out at sea, heavy swells could hit the team at any time…
Filmed in High Definition, Secret Shark Pits will take us on a suspenseful journey into uncovering the secrets of these shark infested pits and solving this spectacular sub-oceanic mystery.
