Imagine yourself lost at sea, far from shore. You are alone in the water, drifting with the current. Out here you’re a target for the ocean’s most feared hunters – sharks, creatures of grim legend. What would you do when the sharks appear…at the dead of night?
South African shark expert Mike Rutzen wants to find out, by conducting the longest and most difficult dive of his life. Mike Rutzen is famous for his breathtaking underwater encounters with sharks outside the cage, as featured in Sharkman and Great White Shark, A Living Legend. Mike has gone eyeball to eyeball with great whites, bull sharks and reef sharks in his quest to understand these animals. He has designed an intricate language to communicate with sharks. He believes that sharks aren’t mindless killing machines but that they have a sophisticated and subtle psychology. To prove his theory, Mike is prepared to undergo the ultimate test. To share the water day and night with the most feared of all sharks: the Great White.
On three marathon dives, he will drift through the ocean off southern Africa and encounter some of the world’s deadliest sharks. An experience that will test everything he knows. These waters are home to the four most notorious large ‘maneaters’ – the Great White, Tiger Shark, Bull Shark, and the Oceanic White Tip – not to mention hundreds of more smaller sharks like Blacktip reef sharks and Galapagos sharks. He will have plenty of company.
He will need to draw on all of his experience and knowledge to survive a multitude of close shark encounters. How well he copes with the ever curious and hungry sharks will depend on his ability to communicate with them. He has never interacted with sharks for this long however, or with so many. Anything could happen and if he gets it wrong…he could pay with his life.
