Chris Rainier is a world-renowned photographer who has spent the last two decades documenting tattoo cultures in every corner of the world. His odyssey has taken from the Yakuza in Japan to the hill tribes of New Guinea to the street gangs of Los Angeles. And what he has found is that tattoos are engrained in the consciousness of humans as a way of expressing identity.

In Tattoo Odyssey, Chris travels to the remote Indonesian island of Siberut to visit the Mentawai—a jungle culture whose bodies are embedded with ink. From there the film expands into an adventure that connects the tribes of the ancient world with the newly-tattooed aficionados of the west. And what Chris discovers is a deeply-seated idea of what it means to express oneself as a human being.
