The Renwick opened in 1972 as the Nation’s craft museum. Now, 40 years on, it’s time to celebrate the future of American craft. But could the Renwick Gallery accommodate a collection of work that had moving parts that made noise, and required electrical upgrading? It’s an old building with a lot of quirky spaces. And how to display the work of 40 very different artists in a way that doesn’t shortchange any? The staff of the Renwick had some long days ahead.
