On January 27 1951, a plane flew through the dawn darkness above Nevada’s desolate Frenchman Flat. On board was a 1,000lb atomic bomb, named Able. At dawn, the crew released Able toward the desert floor. The age of nuclear weapons testing in the continental US had begun. Through eyewitness reports, classified documents, photos and film, this is a fascinating, sobering, look at the largest nuclear testing programme in history.
