Pocahontas: Beyond The Myth
1 x 60'
Far removed from the Disney fantasy, we revisit the life of a legendary woman whose story gains resonance over time, not least now, on the 400-year anniversary of her death in March 1617. Here’s what we have been told: Pocahontas was a gorgeous Indian maiden who threw herself in front of an angry mob of Powhatan Indians to save the life of handsome English adventurer John Smith. They later fell in love and married. In reality, however, she was only about 10 years old when she knew John Smith. He was a short, brash soldier-for-hire. He had a knack for self-promotion and his war stories frequently ended with a comely high-born woman saving and seducing him. The real story of Pocahontas is better – and more complicated. This film tells that story – separating fact from fiction – focusing on what it means to America then and now.
