episode description

In epsiode one we take a look at Kaua'i - the oldest island in the archipelago. Kaua'i's isolation for thousands of years led to an increased rate of evolution. In a relatively short time, new species are formed here, many animals and plants can only be found here. But they are in danger. On the shield volcano Waiʻaleʻale - the rainiest place on earth, scientists like Lukas Behnke are fighting for the preservation of endangered native animals and plants. A few miles away, Kelli Harshman and her ROD Response Team are fighting to save the native Ohia tree from an insidious fungus. With its 11 ecosystems, Kaua'i is hotly sought after in Hollywood. When it comes to finding the right location for the next film, Angela Tillson is in demand. The 64-year-old has been a location scout on Kauai for 32 years. The spectacular Na'Pali coast in particular is a popular film backdrop. The inaccessible cliffs are probably one of the most fascinating parts of Hawaii. Just a few kilometres to the east, Haraguchi-Nakayama runs the taro farm of her ancestors in the 5th generation. Her motivation: The young Hawaiians should also get to know and appreciate taro so that the old tradition is not lost.
