In episode two we take a look at Maui and Moloka'i. In the middle of the archipelago they form the heart of Hawaii. The second largest island of Hawai'i - Maui - is a true paradise for surfers. Archie Kalepa was one of the first big wave surfers and is still chasing the thrill today. The ukulele represents the sound of the islands like no other instrument. Eric Devine has been building the plucked string instrument for 20 years. In Kula he goes in search of the perfect wood. The island's dance – there's no doubt about that – is the hula. Pi'ilani Lua is a 4th generation hula teacher. The Kumu Hula now wants to pass this old tradition on to the next generation, to their children and grandchildren. Moloka'i is the complete opposite, spared from mass tourism, time seems to have stood still here. There is only one hotel on the whole island and not a single traffic light. Environmentalists like Matt Yamashita are fighting to save the endangered monk seal. A special feature of Hawaii's fifth largest island: the local post office can send painted coconuts all over the world. This whimsical idea saved the post office from closure 30 years ago.
