episode description
The Humboldt Current, flowing from Patagonia to the equator, fuels life on land and sea. A female blue whale follows her ancestral migration along Chile’s coast, feeding on krill, while the world’s smallest otter, the chungungo, patrols the waters and hunts for pups. Southern sea lions roar as dominant males rule harems, while mothers protect their young from danger. Humboldt penguins nest in cliff burrows, trekking daily to fish, and inland the Atacama’s guanacos search for mates. Peruvian boobies watch the sea for bait-balls of anchoveta, a rare and explosive feast. The current is generous but unpredictable, and as a sea lion pup is saved from drowning, our blue whale continues north, still two months from tropical waters where mating or birth may await.
