Cold Fury focuses on wild battles in the bitter cold. From Snow Leopards that hunt Markhors across the treacherous Himalayan mountain range, to Emperor Penguins joining forces against the fierce blizzards of Antarctica, to enraged Capercaillies of Scotland battling it out in the snow cover for the right to a harem. Years of evolution have given these cold weather specialists the tools and training to fight through the toughest conditions.
Sometimes hot weather can be a killer. Animals face immense challenges as rivers dry up and fires rage. It creates a hotbed of conflict. In the Sonoran Desert, temperatures peak at eighty degrees celsius. It’s so hot that creatures choose to live and hunt in the night. It’s predator against predator as Giant Hairy Desert Scorpions pitch their stingers against camel spiders. For the bighorn sheep, hotblooded males are the biggest danger, going head to head in skull shattering battles for mating dominance. Australian budgerigars must dodge some of the fiercest raptors in the world as they snatch a drink in the desert. And in Africa, drought and fires keep the big herds moving - right into the jaws of Nile Crocodiles. It’s blood, sweat and tears, in the hot zone.
Tropical rainforests are the most diverse and rich ecosystems on the planet. That means intense competition and deadly battles. In the mangrove forests of Borneo, saltwater crocodiles are drawn to the rich variety of species on offer. But when they are young they are vulnerable too. Young hatchlings are learning to hunt - right under the watchful eye of a Buffy Fish Owl. Who will be the dinner tonight? Beneath them, mud fights are the deciding factor in mating success. Mudskippers fly through the air in dramatic territorial disputes - tearing at each other's skin. In the Daintree, the oldest tropical rainforest on Earth, worlds are colliding. A turkey, snake and avian romancer find themselves in a three way battle of love, prosperity and life. Up in the canopy, green ants wage a war against nature and gravity, pulling together an impossible feat of nest construction. Watching their efforts, an ant mimic spider is out for blood.
From mountain rivers to the ocean, water wars rewrite the rules of conflict. Underwater, gravity has no meaning. Weird and wonderful creatures of the reef terrorise each other as they battle for an inch of space in the world’s most crowded ecosystems. Coral polyps are some of the most vicious - even with each other. Using their tentacles like swords they fight to the death. Killing each other with lethal stingers. At night, they turn carnivorous - delivering a slow and horrific death to tiny creatures that become trapped in their barbaric arms. Don’t push the boundaries of the Mantis Shrimp, the most powerful puncher in the animal kingdom. Even an octopus has its hands full with this aggressive crustacean. Above the waves, the skirmishes are also violent and brutal. Great Frigate Birds are masterful flyers but they can’t swim. To eat fish, they must steal it from other seabirds - in spectacular mid-air assaults. But nothing compares to the brutality and ocean power of the Great White Shark. If you’re a seal, beware…..
