Episode Information

Colours define the world we know and love. From subtle to shocking, it enhances the beauty of the natural world. Humans love colour, and animals are no different. Colour is a language to most living things, whether as a warning, camouflage or a come on. But there’s more to colour than just pigment. It might seem obvious, but it’s worth remembering that colour is only visible if there are eyes to see it. The better an animal’s colour vision, the greater its use of the spectrum – and this has a big impact on how creatures display and use colour. Colours define how many animals behave, how they mate and how they interact with one another. For us the beautiful and varied shades of the animal kingdom form a spectacular kaleidoscope of colours. But for the creatures themselves, they cannot live without the rich and varied colours of nature.
