Episode Information

In 2005, Riaan Manser became the first person to cycle around the perimeter of Africa, riding a regular, store-bought bicycle. He travelled 37,000km through 34 countries on an epic journey that took him two years to complete. But there was unfinished business; while Riaan was writing the subsequent book, he stood in front of a map of Africa and was struck by a lightning bolt realization: his trip had not included Madagascar – an island to the East of the African continent and officially an African country. Perhaps he had never quite completed the Africa journey after all? So he made a decision: to circumnavigate Madagascar in the most basic possible way – by kayak, the bicycle of the water. Pirates, thieves, rough seas, cyclones, blisters and sunblindness are just some of the perils that plague Riaan’s journey as he and his 5 metre kayak battle the rugged, 5000km long coastline of Madagascar. Will Riaan Manser finally finish his Africa Odyssey and notch up his second ‘world first’?
