East African Rift Valley

The Afar Triangle is one of Earth’s most dramatic construction sites. Here, three rift systems meet above sea level – a geological rarity. As Africa slowly tears apart, scientists trace plate movements that may reshape the continent. At the same time, paleoanthropologists search for humanity’s roots in Ethiopia’s Awash Valley, where “Lucy” was discovered. In the scorching Danakil Depression, researchers even hunt for life in extreme conditions, linking Earth’s deep history with our own origins.

2
The Alps

The Alps – Europe’s heart of stone and its highest mountain range. Born 130 million years ago from the collision of Africa and Europe, they still rise today. This film follows scientists on a journey from the mountains’ dramatic origins to the threats of the future. From climate change and melting glaciers to rockfall risks and underground megaprojects like the Brenner Base Tunnel, researchers decode the Alps’ complex geology to understand how these iconic peaks are transforming – and what dangers lie ahead.

3
The Amazon

The Amazon – mighty river, vast rainforest. The film follows scientists investigating how this ecosystem formed and how it works today, using animations to reveal hidden processes. The river stretches around 6400 km, in places 10 kilometers wide, and holds about 20 percent of the planet’s freshwater. Yet the modern Amazon is only about 5 million years old; evidence suggests it once flowed west. The Andes shaped it – and now deforestation and climate change threaten a tipping point.
