synopsis
While exploring the African bush, filmmakers Brent Leo Smith and Wium Dörnbrack encounter a rare and alarming sight: a two‑week‑old lion cub rolling playfully among a coalition of male lions, far from the safety of her den. Aware that males often kill cubs they haven’t sired, they begin a desperate search for the cub’s mother, Hahani. Days pass with no sign of her, and the cub remains alone among the males while Hahani tends to a sibling. With the cub’s life in danger, the team ultimately breaks the reserve’s non‑intervention policy. After a failed diversion attempt, Brent acts alone, gently coaxing the cub into a bucket under the cover of darkness and returning her near the den. By morning, Hahani reunites with her daughter, later named Bucket in honour of the simple tool—and brave rescue—that saved her life.
