synopsis

The Curse of the Gothic Symphony follows a fanatical and eclectic group of music lovers determined to break the curse surrounding British composer Havergal Brians notorious First Symphony. Written in the 1920s and recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the largest and most challenging symphony ever composed, the Gothic Symphony demands two orchestras, four brass bands and five full choirs, running over two hours. Long regarded as impossible to stage, it has become the ultimate cult, neglected work in British classical music. Filmed over five years, the film interweaves Brians remarkable life with the modern-day crusade to mount the first full performance in Brisbane. At its heart are conductor John Curro, choral master Alison Rogers, producer Veronica Fury and indefatigable champion Gary Thorpe, whose obsession drives them toward an all-or-nothing artistic gamble. Failure is not an optionthe curse must be broken. Also available is a 1 x 60' version.
