synopsis
In 2005, Riaan Manser became the first person to cycle around the perimeter of Africa, riding a regular, store-bought bicycle. He travelled 37,000km through 34 countries on an epic journey that took him two years to complete. But there was unfinished business; while Riaan was writing the subsequent book, he stood in front of a map of Africa and was struck by a lightning bolt realization: his trip had not included Madagascar an island to the East of the African continent and officially an African country. Perhaps he had never quite completed the Africa journey after all? So he made a decision: to circumnavigate Madagascar in the most basic possible way by kayak, the bicycle of the water. Pirates, thieves, rough seas, cyclones, blisters and sunblindness are just some of the perils that plague Riaans journey as he and his 5 metre kayak battle the rugged, 5000km long coastline of Madagascar. Will Riaan Manser finally finish his Africa Odyssey and notch up his second world first?
