synopsis

Miss Nikki and the Tiger Girls reflects the dramatic change in Myanmar since filming began over two years ago. The story of five young women breaking free from tradition to find their own voice becomes a metaphor for a country suddenly thrust onto the world stage. In September 2010, after more than fifty years under military rule and the 2007 crackdown, people view another staged election with weary cynicism, expecting the military to return to power. Against this backdrop, the Tiger Girls form through an unlikely alliance between Miss Nikki, an ambitious Australian, and Peter Thein, a profit-driven Burmese entrepreneur. The girls struggle with talent, confidence, and family pressure, and when they fail to match the industrys required look, Peter fires them and threatens legal action. After Aung San Suu Kyis release, they begin writing original songs. Nikki and her boyfriend Chris fund the album and videos, and the group becomes Me N Ma Girls. There is also a feature length version avialable for this film.
