Puggles, Schnoodles, Labradoodles – they’re not crazy candy inventions, they’re brand new breeds of dog.
These hybrid hounds are purebred to purebred crosses. The American Canine Hybrid Club recognises more than 400 of them, everything from Dorkies to Pekapoos. Unsurprisingly, most come with eye-popping price tags – Australian labradoodles go for $2,500 a pup.
For thousands of years, humans have been trying not just to find the perfect dog, but to create the perfect dog. Border Collies were bred to herd sheep, Labrador Retrievers to hunt. The Leonberger was bred simply to promote its home town, Leonberg, in Germany. New crossbreeds are cropping up at every turn. They’re bred to be low-maintenance, hypoallergenic, companions.
But not everyone is a fan. Some owners prefer the predictability of purebreds. We look at the human connection. As we search for the perfect dog, perhaps we’ve overlooked an important point. Maybe perfection is simply the human-canine bond.
