Episode Information

With as many as three rhino poached every day, many believe the situation in South Africa to be hopeless... Yet, rhino expert, Karen Trendler is refreshingly optimistic about the future... Drawing from a lifetime of experience, having successfully raised over two hundred rhino orphans, Karen builds an orphanage like no other facility in the world. Designed exclusively for victims of the current brutal crisis, the orphanage takes in young rhinos, which would have been left for dead. Having witnessed their mothers being butchered, calves arrive disorientated, traumatized and frightened. Under Karen’s guidance, the team sensitively begins to rebuild their shattered lives. These fragile calves find themselves in the care of an extraordinary, dedicated team of individuals. Veterinarians, caregivers, surrogate mothers, who initially sleep next to the traumatized youngsters for reassurance, while providing intensive, 24-hour, hands-on attention. Stabilized, it’s not long before the calves begin to bond with fellow victims at the orphanage and begin to form new family groups.
