All over the world the 31st October has a special significance: Halloween. Thanks to superstition and tradition, many animal species have become symbolic of the scary, evil and supernatural, and have come to represent Halloween. And when it comes to animals and Halloween witches have a lot to answer for, whether it’s the salamander slipped into their cauldron or the black cat at their heels. But the vast majority of animal associations with Halloween are driven by their preference for the night, and perhaps none more so than the bat. If the bat’s spooky appearance wasn’t enough, their vampiric associations have cemented their place in Halloween lore.

There’s no doubt that Halloween is a lot of fun. But in the days afterwards why not remember the amazing, awe-inspiring animals that have uniquely shaped the holiday?
