Semana Santa
1 x 60'
The most extraordinary celebration of Christian Holy Week in the western hemisphere takes place in the colourful city of Antigua, Guatemala. Thousands of purple-robed Cucarachas solemnly march the cobbled streets for hours at a time, carrying sacred floats adorned with the miraculous images of Jesus and Mary. The streets are covered with spectacular sawdust and flower petal carpets created by locals in front of their homes. Crowds of Maya and worldwide visitors come to witness the processions as they leave the churches and wind their way through the streets.
Narrated in part by local authors, artists and Cucuruchos, this documentary explores the origins of the celebration and the path to its present glory.
