Into the Icy Void

In this episode, we interweave two dramatic tales involving deadly crevasses. In the first, Canadian Mounties Ken Putnam and Kirk Gale are on snowmobile patrol in one of Canada's enormous national parks. Leaving the track, thinking that someone may be in trouble ahead, they drive onto an unstable glacier. Ken pulls out his camera, steps out, and plunges into the ice. In the other story, two outdoors enthusiasts, and novice climbers have planned a mountain top wedding on the icy Mount Rainier. After a morning of close calls, including avalanches, white outs, and altitude sickness, they’re less than 2500ft from the summit when Melody is blown off her feet by a gust of wind and begins to slide toward a gaping crevasse in the glacier. We interweave both stories, dissecting the good and bad choices the victims made, and ultimately reveal who survived to tell the tale.

Tragedy at Sea

A crew of five set are on a routine trip to deliver a sailboat. Things start out well, but soon the clear skies and calm seas quickly turn tumultuous. Winds gust up to 70mph and the crew battles 40ft waves. As the gale intensifies, crew relations begin to crumble. Eventually, pounded by wave after wave for too long, the boat fills with water, and the crew is forced to abandon ship. Now the crew is stranded, more than 100 miles from dry land. They have no supplies: no water, no food and no treatment for injuries. Hypothermia and dehydration begin to take its toll: two of the crew drink seawater, which does more harm than good, and just when things couldn’t get any worse, sharks begin to circle. Only two of the crew will survive this tragic story at sea. Survival expert Brian Horner breaks down the split second decisions they make that determine life or death in the open ocean.
