synopsis

Elephants the largest land animals, remain mysterious. This story follows Wonky Tusk, an matriarch in Zambia’s South Luangwa Valley, known for her backward-pointing tusk and astonishing behaviour. Each year, she leads her family through the front door of a safari lodge to feast on wild mangoes, captivating guests and defying expectations. Filmmaker Nathan Pilcher documents her for five years, uncovering a complex duality: by day, gentle visitors; by night, part of a raiding force that devastates nearby villages. As tensions rise between humans and elephants, Wonky Tusk’s story reveals remarkable intelligence, adaptability, and the fragile boundary between coexistence and conflict. This is part of the Stories of African Strand.
